The Kaffelogic Chaff collector uses a unique radial airflow method which is highly efficient at separating the chaff from the beans. However, as beans roast darker and darker they become lighter and lighter: more like chaff. So it’s no surprise that there comes a point where bigger loads sizes and their associated higher fan speeds can lead to some of the beans ending up in the chaff collector tray.
If you notice a significant number of beans in the chaff after large, dark roasts, the good news is that most of the beans that end up in the chaff get there during cool down. This means they are fully roasted. All that is required is a technique for separating them from the chaff after cool down has finished.
This is accomplished by pouring all of the contents of the chaff collector tray back into the roaster, and using fan preview to run the fan gently enough to drive only the chaff back up into the chaff collector.
Once you start fan preview, immediately lower the batch size until the fan is slow enough to leave the beans in the roast chamber while driving the chaff into the chaff collector.
Note
Access fan preview with the ≡ button.
Fan preview requires firmware version 7.10 or higher. See Update firmware.
